So, 2 years ago a cavity fell out of one of my wisdom tooth, and I never got it put back in. 1 year ago, chips of that tooth starting coming off after I was eating some candy, leaving a big ass hole in the tooth. A couple months ago, I had my first severe bout of pain, so severe I went into the dental ER at NYU. They diagnoses me as having pulpitis, and gave me some tylenol with codeine and a course of antibiotics and told me to come back for an extraction. Of course, with my luck, I was doing my surgery rotation at that time, and the only available appointments were on days I simply could not miss. So, I just kept on with the pain killers. The pain would subside, then recur. I tried to get something done in Westchester, but the dentist freaked out when I mentioned my Exercise induced anaphylactic episodes.
Anyhoo, now the gum around that wisdom tooth and the next one is tender, mushy, swollen, and the pain is like this really annoying itch. Both that tooth and the one in front are loose. So, pulpitis and now gingivitis.
My questions are as follows:
1. I have an appointment for an extraction back in California, but this will be a good week and a half from now. What can I do in the meanwhile? I've been brushing my teeth and the gum 2-3 times a day, as well as flossing and using Listerine. Am I also going to need antibiotics?
2. I don't think my insurance will cover this procedure, so how much should I expect to pay for whatever x-rays they need to take as well as the extraction of that wisdom tooth and possibly the one in front of it?
3. I was really planning on enjoying some good foods while in Cali. How much is this going to hurt after the procedure and for how long?
Thanks.
