Hi all, am looking to purchase a capsulotomy lens as would like to have my own for after residency. Am familiar first-hand with the Abraham capsulotomy lens but was wondering if folks have had positive experience with the Volk capsulotomy lens and would strongly recommend it. Any suggestions folks have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Don't mean to be that guy claiming my technique is the best, but I used a lens for awhile and switched over the past year to not using a lens for my YAGs. I feel it makes the procedure slightly quicker and more comfortable for the patient. I have a lens on standby if I need it, but haven't had to use it in awhile. I'm sure either of those lenses would be great though. Have your practice buy it if they don't have what you want or contact Lombart to inquire about a resident discount if you really want one (or are opening your own practice).

Don't buy your own anything unless you need it now as a resident...these things are totally tax deductible to the practice later. No need to pay more taxes than necessary.

Appreciate folks’ suggestions regarding obtaining through future employer when possible. Fortunately have some small equipment related funding through my department currently that I wanted to use for this purchase before it expires at graduation.

so many other useful things to purchase. This will sit in a closet somewhere after you join a practice that has the same exact lens you purchase or surgery center that has multiples of them.

I'd rather have books, references, journal subscriptions, academy or other professional memberships etc etc etc....

To answer your core question, I prefer the Volk lens for capsulotomies as you don't have to worry about being in or out of the small area with extra mag. The benefit to the Abraham lens is that it's better for LPIs and competent for both purposes, so avoids the need to purchase two lenses.

For what it's worth, I would treat this as a very low priority purchase, in agreement with the above commenters. Not only are you unlikely to need your own, but I almost never use a lens for my capsulotomies anymore.
