To all the ODs...

have you seen patients with a Purevision sensitivity?

I have a patient who's been in PV for the past year, but in the last eight weeks she's had edema + SEI , which I've been treating with steroid. As soon as she resolved, I started her back in her contacts and a week later all her SEI are back.

Initially I thought she had EKC, because it presented with classic symptoms. But, after three or four weeks of this... I'm starting to think it's the lenses. She hasn't changed anything else in her routine. makeup, solution, etc is all the same.

If I change her back to a non-sihy lens + clear care and she still flares up I'm starting to think she might need a blood work-up to rule out auto-immune diseases.

Anyone else seen patients allergic to Purevision ?? 😕

CPW, we have had about 8 cases where the patient became sensitive to the silhy lenses. 2 were PV. All symptoms went away when we took them out of the lens. When the Vistakon rep. Stopped by, our associate that does most of the contact lenses asked her about the problem of patients becoming sensitive to the SlHy and I believe that the rep said that they were beginning to get reports of patients becoming sensitive.

It's my understanding that allergies can develope over time, even in someone with no previous allergy history. For example, I've heard of a people who have a pet dog and then after more than a year of owning it, begin having allergies to the dander and such.

As far as contacts, I have only had only one patient with what I believed to be allergy to the sihy material. I had switched her from av2 8.7 to av adv 8.7, all other parameters were the same(lens solutions, wearing time etc.) and just two days later she returned complaining of red, itchy eyes and decreased contact wear time. I am not sure if it was a silicone allergy; but putting her back in the av2(after a couple of days of no contact lens wear) got rid of it.

I've seen this a lot with Advance, because the lenses just junk up all over the place. But, this is the first time I've seen someone react to PV .. especially after 10 months of successful wear.

I do not use Purevision too often but I have seen some reaction with Advance, Oasys, and Night&Day. When I switched these patients to Acuvue 2 or other non-silicon hydrogels lenses, the reaction dissappear. As we continue toward the SiHy lenses, we may see more of this. So far, I heard some cases from my Vistakon rep.

I've just got to say that it is PAINFULLY DIFFICULT to read your posts.

I have not seen sihy allergies for myself, but my dad said he is having a ton of allergies from it. By ton, I'm sure he means like 5, but he tends to exaggerate.

I had a patient who had a severe reaction to silicone hydrogels and ended up in the hospital...scarey case.
