Just wondering if these topics are ever asked. I haven't encountered a question, at least I don't think, on the practice tests that I have taken from Kaplan (haven't taken too many either). Didn't know if I should place emphasis on these topics or know the basic purposes, etc. of each.

Sorry for the long drawn out question. I hope that I was able to convey exactly what I meant.

I've asked the same question and people said that they did get Purification/Separation questions on their Dat. I got a couple from my TopScore tests in the last couple of weeks.
