Hi. I am a 4th yr medical student in Iran. It's a long time that I've been considering quitting medicine here & pursuing it elsewhere. But as I've been told it would be easier for me to finish my education here & then move to US. Is that really true? If so, how hard should I try till my Iranian degree is accepted there? Wouldn't it just be easier for me to move to another country & pursue my education there & then move to US? I would be really thankful if you'd answer my question as I am really in the middle of a situation here. Thanks.

you're almost finished so you should finish. if you leave now you would have to start from the beginning again and no guarantee you would be able to. there are certainly iranians working in medicine in the US. obviously it will be harder for you than if you were coming from another country which isn't viewed with such suspicion and disdain by the US authorities so it may be harder for you to get a visa, and thus harder to get a residency.

what is the problem with you experience of iranian education thus far?

If your Iran school is listed in IMED (International Medical Education Directory) you are eligible to take the USMLE.. and perhaps other boards of other countries. In the case of the US, you should finish there and take the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam).. if you're confident you can score high.

In the case of the U.S., if you quit now and pursue medical education there, you must complete the premed college requirements (Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chem and Physics) if you haven't already, and take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). I don't know if you're interested in the U.S. or not, but just in case you are, there ya go =)

There really isn't any other country that is "better" for getting licensed to practice in the U.S other than Canada. If you quit and try to get into a North American medical school, both U.S and Canadian medical schools require you to do an undergraduate degree in the U.S/Canada before applying. It really is better for you to stay in Iran and finish your degree. Doing a medical degree in Australia, Ireland, UK, Caribbean or anywhere won't give you much advantage over a medical degree in Iran. The best way to improve your chances to practice in the US are to do US clinical electives and score high on your USMLEs.

errr, it is virtually impossible for an Iranian to come to the US as we don't have formal diplomatic relations. Your only way into the USA is through asylum or by emigrating to another country and then applying for a visa for the US.
