Quinn you seem to give really good advice so here are a few questions. I recieved my SLOR from an ER Dir for a rotation that I received an "A". But on the SLOR he marked high pass - is that a mistake or is his high pass a subjective eval I have to live with? Also, he marked all excellent boxes... but only wrote two words in the comment space. Is this a problem? I will be talking with him about this but just thought I'd look for some outside info before hand.

One last question, I received a strong letter from the head of surgery but he is not a native English speaker so the letter's grammar and use of language leaves much to be desired. (like this e-mail!) Should I forget about using this letter???

Thanks for any advice. My app is one of the ninety at USF!!

I woudln't worry about the SLOR. Especially if you got all excellents in the boxes... as long as he didn't write anything negative, it's all good. I do know that the PDs prefer the SLOR, as its much more objective. WHen I had a SLOR filled out, the attending said "If I gave you all excellents and honors, you would be an intern, so I can't do that." Fair enough. Anyways, don't fret too much about this SLOR.

As for the other letter, as long as it is a glowing letter, don't let that worry you either. As long as the gist of the letter is that you're a good applicant, that's fine. Remember that a lot of EM attendings have short attention spans, and will likely just scan the letter for the main point, or won't even read it at all. On the interview trail, I had several attendings who didn't read my PS or the LORs I had (obvious during the interview when I answered questions that were blatantly obvious in my application).

Please excuse any typo-s, as i just got back from a drug rep dinner (mmm free alcohol).

Q, DO

Quinn, thanks for the advice. I guess I can chill out a little bit on looking for the "perfect" letter.
