Okay, so disclaimer first: I am posting a question from the 150 released questions (ie...don't read if you plan to do this test later).

I am hoping one of you geniuses can help me understand the answer (which I got correct basically by the process of elimination).

Q. A 10-year old boy is severely burned. Nitrogen loss occurs during the first few days after the burn. During this acute period, which of the following substances plays a major role in nitrogen loss?
A. Cortisol
B. Erythropoeitin
C. Insulin
D. PTH
E. T4
 
Cortisol breaks down protein in times of stress (a burn would qualify I guess). When protein breakdown exceeds synthesis, it is called negative nitrogen balance (ie nitrogen loss).
