I just wanted to know if anyone has an idea about the practical exams administered by USC and other universities for admission into the advanced standing program.

itsme

Thanks for posting it here, itsme.

Its been a while since I gave those exams that I cant seem to remember too well.

I vaguely remember doing a

-bridge FVC on upper molar and 3/4th on the premolar.

-cl 2 an a lower premolar.

Also be prepared to do onlays and they might also ask you to do a partial denture design and wax carving. They might have changed the requirements too 😕
This is exactly why I ask all of you to post your questions in the forum as others using this forum will be able to answer your questions better.

For this practical exams, do the ask you to bring your own instruments and materials? or they provide you with them? are you required to pay a fee? or is it included in you application fee?

Depending on the school you may or may not have to carry your own instruments. I haven't kept myself updated on any changes but when I applied USC asked us to bring everything whereas UCSF provided us with eveything. I am not sure of UOP ( I think they did provide us with the instruments 😕 . )
You have to pay only for a practice session and not for the exam .

hey,

I took the UOP admission test for IDS last yr.
We were required to bring our own hand pieces but that was it...the rest they supplied.

We were asked to make a class 2 amalgam prep and an MOD , one on a molar and one on a premolar.
next we were asked to make 3/4 PFM ( porcelain fused to metal) crown and an onlay.

at UCSF, i think it was only a class 2 amalgam prep and fill and an MOD.

Qs: I am stuck in a dilema, is it better to go through two yrs of an IDS program or get a dental license by taking the bench test ( if rescheduled) and the clinical exam???

stefanels, Do you actually own a calculator? If you do get it out and dust it away. Now, start to add numbers. Money on one side and months and years on the other. Done? 😱
Well, now take a peek out the window and find yourself a map, and decide how much you like California, like to live there for many years to come. either 😍 or 🙄
Done? then start praying to get the bench test rescheduled. 🙂

Now, seriously, there are many factors you should take into account, one them are your actual, realistic posibilities. Think about it, and then decide. After all, if the bench thing doesn't works out, you can always apply to schools.

hi henna
if we are reqiured to bring our own hand pieces then where do we get one from ......?????????do u know some place from where i can get one

I am not aware of any place that you could borrow it from,. If its possible you could borrow it from someone you know . I would recommend that you practice for the exam before you take it so get it asap.

where can i practise for this ?????

as henna mentioned in another post ....u can get the handpieces from a dental school near u or a private dental clinic but remember to specify that its to practice on mounted teeth or typodonts.
if u know someone already in a dental school u could request them to let u use their handpiece for the day of the exam. make sure u have one or two backups!
if u r volunteering at a dental clinic, u could even go there and practice, between patients or at another compressor.
since i am not giving the bench, i havent really delved into this situation. this is just my 2cents. there might be others better equipped to answer this question of yours.

Hi,
Being a foreign trained dentist it has really been almost close to 2 years since so many of us even treated patients!!!!!

So where do we learn about these exams and who is going to train us to take this test at UOP / USCF..???

Borrowing a hand-piece and other instruments seems really so easy when compared to the test ahead of us...It will be great if any one knows where we can learn class 2 amalgam prep and an MOD , 3/4 PFM ( porcelain fused to metal) crown and an onlay.!!!!

It shouldn't take us more than 2 practice sessions to get a hang of it ..Im sure , but where and who is going to show us how to do this?
Any info will be highy useful.

I had the same Q's as u.

Refer to Shillingburg (for crowns ) sturdevant (for class 2 ) it literally walks you through the whole thing.
You can also purchase or borrow models of the preps from dental students.

Hi All,

From your post looks like you got calls from both UOP and UCSF. Hope you have joined one of those. I got a call from UOP and also am expecting to be called at UCSF. Can you share your experiences as well as tips for success in both these places, esp. UOP as my Interview is scheduled end of this month. Also would the scores for NBDE, TOEFL and GPA matter once already called for Interview. Any Dos and Donts with some tips would reallly reallly help me.

Thanks a lot in advance.

UOP has a practice session...they give you mannuals that walk you through all the steps plus they also have models.

you get the same mannuals during the actual exam as well.

they even rent handpieces during the exam.

for the interview, i would suggest that you brush up the clinical aspect.

do this practical exams take place on the same day of the interview? or are they scheduled some other day?

the entire group of applicants is split into two batches...and every individual is given the exact date and time of the interview.

both the exam and the interviews are conducted simultaneously, ie one batch goes through the interviews while the other batch goes through the exam the same day ... and its vice versa on the next day.

Stefanels,

Can you expand on what you meant by "Brush up Clinical aspects'?. Also what kind of Interview it is?. Is it personal or more subject related at UOP. I am going for the Interview on 22nd and every piece of info you guys share here will be of utmost use to us all. can some one narrate their interview here. Also The Dos and Donts for UOP INterview.

Anyone have an Idea on the success rate. How many people they call for the Interview and How many they accept. Appreciate all your help.

There is a limit to what they can put us through 😡 😡 😡

And its a 3 yr program !😱

What a crazy bunch !😡

Hi,
It will really be helpful if some one could spare time to share their UOP admissions process as well as the Dos and Donts and also the success rate ( How many are called and how many are offered) as per my previous post. Appreciate the help.

phew:laugh:
some requirements maryland needs....they rather say they dont offer any advanced standing program anymore.........😉

when i talk to school of maryland ,they told me that they do take foreign students ,,,,but they have no space for them for at least 2 years??????????????🙁

This is from UOP:

"We have a three day examination. First day is practice $ 60.00(optional), second and third day is either the exam or interview. No written nor oral examination are applied."

Something else,
"Any degree in a language other than English must be accompanied by a notarized translation from a bona fide U.S. translator."

Where can I get info about a bona fide US translator?

Bumping this message with hope some one will answer!

DDS Fight,

Maybe if you visit the Dental School Interview Feedback section of SDN. http://www.studentdoctor.net/interviewdent/index.asp

There are a few repplies about UOP there. I know these are interviews toward freshmen year, but still it may help you in something. Who knows!!!

Hi Meggs,
That was quite helpful (Finished reading as there were 4 of them) but would like to see some one from Advanced Standing Program sharing the info as the process seem to be entirely different for the fresh men (like 1:1 Vs Panel for ASP). Appreciate if some one could respond.

I will like to know the same info but about U California @San Fco.
How many get called to interview, what are the chances, etc.

I got this quote from this very old thread.

International Dental > acceptance
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52458&perpage=20&pagenumber=2

I did not want to bump it 'cause only this one was actually useful.

My advice for UOP is - practice hard for the bench part. Order the manual and the models from UOP and try to do exactly what they ask you. On the exam, all the preparations are on the maxilla, but you don't have to work indirectly (with a mirror) - you can take the model in your hand and turn it around wile you perform the preparations. That was a pleasant surprise for me! You will also work only with a high speed hand piece as well as with chisels, hatchets, etc..
I scored only 85 on part I and 270 on TOEFL. The GPA's are not relevant (at least that's what people at UOP say) since different schools have different criteria.
Sincerely, I am not sure what got me accepted. I am sure that I did well on the bench exam but you cen never be certain about the interviews...
I hope this will help. I wish you good luck.

In case any of you aiming towards Case Western, take a look at their 2-day bench test procedures:

1. Class II amalgam preparation and fill.
2. Class II composite preparation and fill.
3. Class III inlay preperation.
4. Full gold crown preparation.
5. A complete upper and lower tooth set up on mounted casts prepared with bite rims.
6. Removable Partial Denture designs for two cases (casts and surveyors provided). Casts will be surveyed and R.P.D.'s drawn for design.
7. Waxing of a full crown on a typodont.

Depending upon this results you'll be placed in second or third year.

BTW, I got this from the application packet.

Ying-Yang: A rather hard test, but a low tuition: 32,120 for 2003-04.

😱 😱 😱 😱 why dont they just give us a license to practice if we need to prove that we can do all that???????

I was never asked any subject related questions ( thank god for that 🙂 ) Just talk to them well and relax !

Ok folks, summarizing, so far we'got: 😀

For UOP:
Requires handpiece. Offers a practice session the previous day for $60.

Class 2 Amalgam prep and an MOD, one on a molar and one on a premolar.

3/4 PFM ( porcelain fused to metal) crown and an Onlay.

For UCSF:
Provides instruments.

Class 2 amalgam prep and fill and an MOD.

For UCSF WRITTEN test go here:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86676

The 3/4 crown and the onlay, on which teeth where they required? What material was the onlay supossed to be made of? composite, acrylic, etc? or was it only the preparation?

What about crown waxing? any of that?

Does UCSF practical test requires partial denture desing?

Anything else we should practice for??? 😕 Any other input from recent test takers??? +pity+

🙂 Thanks to stefanels and Henna who contributed so much!!!

Hi ! This is Zeb , I just joined the forum . I have a question , is the californian boards still open for international dentists , I just gave my part one on July 12 th 2004, did any of you take the exam . How did you find it , 😳

Thanks!

Zeb

i have applied to case western reserve.
what do they mean by waxing of a full crown? do v have to prepare a full crown on a tooth prepared for crown(tooth with crown cutting already done)?

do they ask clinical quetions during the test ? how seriously they look at our work? do they consider this work only to decide the year for admission, or they consider it to decide whether to give admission or not?
how should i prepare?

help please

Henna,
You seem to be a very active member; and I read some of your posts regarding borrowing/buying dental compressors and equipment for home practice. My wife has just got admission, and we would like to sell all the dental equipment that we bought for home practice, including compressor, tubing, typodont, teeth, etc.
Where do I advertise on this forum?
Please advise.
Thanks.

Hi,
I have posted this thread elsewhere so i apologise if it is repetetive. I am a foreign graduate that went throught the IDP program at UCLA ( first batch). I now have my own practice in Milpitas. I am going to open it for students who want to practice on typodonts on the weekedns( fri , sat and sun). This way u will have a place to practice.A nominal fee will be charged. Due to high response I am opening my practice this wed sept 27 between 6-8 pm for sign ups for practice time slots( lottery) and we will begin sessions on friday. Try to be there on wed so u may see the place and facilities. It will also give you an opportunity to network with others. ADDRESS is 414 south main street, milpitas, ca 95035. IF u have any questions please mail at [email protected]
