A Horse and a carriage cost $5,000 together. By selling the horse at a 10% profit and the carriage at an 80% lost, a total profit of 1% is made. What is the cost of the horse?

i kno i saw this one before....i usually work backwards it works wonders sometimes and sometimes its hell.

i dont have much time but ill set it up for you...welll ill try to.

Say Horse is X and carriege is Y

X+Y = 5000

1.1(x) + .2(Y) = 5000(.01)

and just solve for X. 1.1 is the 10% profit and the .2 is the 80% loss. the way to think about it is if its a profit add that percent to 1 and if its a loss subtract that loss from one. hope that helped.

1.1(x) + .2(5000-x) = 5050 <--- bc, y = 5000-x

1.1x + 1000 -.2x = 5050

.9x = 4050

x = 4500 and therefore y = 500

check: (1.1 x 4500) + (.2 x 500) = 4950 + 100 = 5050

profit of 1% on a 5000 investment = 5050

Not sure if this is right, but this is how I set it up....
H + C = 5000
.1H - .8C = .01(5000)

Rearranged the first equation and plugged it into the second...
C = 5000 - H
.1H - .8(5000 - H) = .01(5000)
to make this easier to solve I multiplied by 10..
1H - 8(5000-H) = .1(5000)
1H - 40000 + 8H = 500
9H = 40500
H = 4500

No need to apologize for anything. I viewed this question and my eyes crossed. The only reason I was able to solve this was based on your initial assessment and approach to the probelm. Without your rational I would've sat and scratched my head for five minutes wondering how in the world I'd set it up. Your strategy was extremely helpful to me and I thank you for that. Is it me or CDM sort of overkill. I just feel a little discourage about the QR section of the DAT now. After doing 3 practice test, I can't seem to finish the entire test and can't score higher than a 16. On top of that, the explanations suck. What initially was suppose to be a practice test and study the ones I missed, has now become a full days worth of QR. My day has gone to waste trying to figure out the problems and the explanations. Any suggestions? Should I keep trying these test or go back to the basics b/c these problems seem really advance. From here on out or starting tomorrow, I will be starting a thread about tough problems that I've seen on CDM. Thanks again ya'll!

Hang in there man. Just understand how to do the problems....this way...after test 5 ull see results...im on test 6 or 7 and to be honest id love to take 2 tests a day but there just isnt enough time with all the other things i need to study and all. But just get the timing down. if u have no idea wat to do. guess and skip, staring at the problem wont do anything lol. so just move fast. MAKE SURE U READ EACH PROBLEM AND HAD TIME TO ANSWER ALL THE ONES THAT YOU SAW AND KNEW EXACTLY WAT TO DO. honestly im hoping that CDM is overkill lol.
