Ruth has gotten 52 hits in 150 at bats. How many hits does she need in her next 100 at bats to have a total average (hits/at bat) of .325?

I keep getting 36 but the answer is 30. This is a problem from DAT destroyer can anybody help?

Sure. You have 52/150. They want to know: how many more hits (52+x) in the next 100 bats (150+100) to equal 0.325. Solving for x gives you just about 30.

The way I set it up is:

hits/ at bats=

52 + x / 150 + 100 = .325

52 + x / 250 = .325

52 + x = 81.25

x= 30

You are solving for x because you want to know how many hits she needs. In the question it states "in her next 100 at bats" so we can add 100 to the bats ratio set up above. Now, using algebra solve for X. It should equal roughly 30.

Does that help a bit?

If you follow through with the calculations, x= 29.25. Why wouldn't the answer be 29, rounding down, instead of 30, rounding up?

Because 29 wouldn't be enough to raise her batting average to the target. She needs AT LEAST 30 because you can't get 29.25 hits
