hey guys, so i'm in my 1st yr. of medicine as some of you already know. I thought that i would first have a broad focus as to what i want to be in the future and i seem to be interested either in cardio-thoracic surgery or neurosurgery. I want to know as to how 1st yr. students should prepare themselves if they want to choose any of the above options for their careers. How many hours should they study?? Should they limit their social life to weekends only? And moreover, what's the kind of competition for these type of fields (surgery-related)...?

As you are very junior, first, ask yourself
1) why do i want to do this specialty and what am i basing this decision on?
2) do i know how to become a _____ surgeon? what is the training pathway?
3) am i actually interested in this field?!

if you work hard and show interest (which you can't fake!) then there's no reason why you can't become what you want to be. It's dumb to think that if i study x amout of hours and don't have a social life then i'll become a surgeon. You'll just have to learn how to manage your time.
