Hi, I am an M1 interested in rad onc!
I am trying to work on a few research projects and I was wondering how PDs look at the quality of Rad Onc research. I am sure being a first author is preferred but how about clinical research vs basic science research? How important is getting basic science paper out if you have a handful of first author restrospective clinical studies?

Quantity trumps quality. At least that's my observation.

I agree, for residency interviews and beyond, quantity will always look good. Unless you are taking 1-2 years off during middle of med school to do dedicated research (which many people are doing now) I wouldn't expect a basic science paper to materialize. I've seen a number of residency applicants with a first author red journal paper on a clinical project, that would be a great goal.

Just wondering, as an M1 you have a handful of first author retrospective clinical studies?? thats pretty remarkable.. Keep your mind open during med school... Rad Onc is awesome, but make sure it is a good fit for you.
