I just have a pretty basic question. In pharmacy school, is there a lot of studying of diseases and their effects?

I get queasy when it comes to this stuff, lol. Freshman year of highschool in biology, we were watching a video of these Africans pulling worms out of themselves and it was disugsting. Annnnnnd... I passed out 😀 . LOL. And also when we had to watch a video talking about the effects of ecstasy and there were graphics of brains with holes in them.

I can read about the body and its functions, but when it comes to indepth stuff of how diseases and the like work, I can't take it very well. I think its due to a phobia that involves me imagining/worrying that I might have that problem or disease (even when I know I don't).

So basically, do you think is there a lot of material that might cause me to get nauseous in pharmacy school?

Thanks all!

Nausous??? Well...probably not. You'll be that much older & more in control of what will stimulate that effect.

Some areas yuo encounter might cause nausea - the most common is the anatomy lab, but you get over it pretty quick.

Your fear of getting/having a disease is pretty common too. Most every first year pharmacy/medica/dental/nursing, etc student suffers that. Again...not usually a problem.

Now..having said that...if you do have a symptom or worry that doesn't seem to go away (which can happen)...then you do need to seek help. It doesn't mean you can't attend pharmacy school - you just may need some help keeping the things you're exposed to in the proper perspective.

Don't let your fears get the best of you.....good luck!

GAUDEN44, i know how you feel.

I don't think im as sensitive as you, but I had an experience like that as well. Mine was not a video though.

When I was in HS, I volunteerd at my local Ambulance corp. To complete my EMT training, I had to do 10hrs. in an ER. I'm all gung-ho about this. DR. calls me into a room where he had to put stiches on this guys head. Guy fall and cut his forhead open. So im holding the suction while the Dr. is cutting the wound and what not. I believe he was cleaning it up a bit to stitch it. So he takes this "hook poky thing" like the dentists use and starts tuging on stuff. The pulls out one thing and hes like, this is a vein, this is a nerve.....and thats about as far as I got. 😀 BANG 😀 ....next thing I know I had 4-5 nurses picking my fat a$$ of the floor.

Most embaressing part is, they put me on a chair to roll me to a bed and right that very sec. my corp. pulls up with a patient. I had to hear about it for a a few weeks. Anyway, thought I would share that story.

Next day, this surgeoun was called to the ER for a consult. The ER Dr. just haaaaad to tell him what happend. Sergoun was like, im abt to go up and do an appendix operation (at least I think that is what it was). I was like NO THANKS, ill stay down here and hang out with the perimedics.

Wait... what do you have to do in cadaver labs?

You have to look at dead bodies? I thought that was something in med school, but not pharmacy... 🙁

Hmm, what do you have to do in this lab? Man, that would just be weird I think... and where do they get dead bodies from anyway?

LOL, maybe pharmacy isn't for me...

WOw didn't know they do that. Very cool 🙂 You'll get use to the smell... as for the person... just pretend its not a real person, that might help.

I don't think all pharmacy schools use cadaver labs, at least some of the ones I looked at don't. 🙂
