So, a long, long time ago, when I was fresh out of high school, I managed to get extremely sick and fail out of an entire semester of classes (13 credits). I subsequently left that school, worked for several years, and am attending an entirely different institution with a 4.0.

My question is, will medical schools need to look at that separate institution's miserable semester? If so, how much do you think it will impact things severely? Am I given a chance to explain at all?

Thank you.

I am in a very similar situation. I suggest you go to your first institution and ask to have your failing grades changed retroactively to withdrawals. I needed to write a letter explaining the situation and provide a doctor's note, and the school overturned the failing grades with no problem.

All of the feedback I've had about my situation is that because the Fs have been turned to Ws, because it's been so many years, and because I've got such a high GPA now, med schools will overlook that semester.

Best of luck to you!

You will have to disclose them. Your best bet is to try to get the grades changed to withdrawals (withdraw-failing is not good enough). Good luck. If it doesn't completely trash your GPA, some school will be able to look past it.

I think my GPA should wind up being about a 3.5-3.6 with those included.
