Thanks for the comments in advance.

A classmate who doesn't have an SDN account wanted me to relay a question. He is a new member on the admissions committee at my school, and expressed a general concern he noted about an applicant (no personal information was disclosed) and wanted to get my take on it. I wasn't sure, so I am asking for some guidance.

How do you feel about an applicant who copies and pastes a description of an experience from the schools brochure onto their primary application. I feel this is disingenuous as part of describing experiences on the application is for adcoms to get a sense of one's written communication skills and ability to convey ideas.

Perhaps I am over-analyzing this and it is of no significant concern?

How long was the plagiarized portion - are we talking about a phrase, a sentence, or an entire paragraph? I could see how an applicant would like to accurately describe what the experience entailed in a succinct manner, and chose to use the same wording the institution used.

Very simple: the candidate is lazy, and in interviews, I'd rip him/her new one.

I'm kind of confused about why your adcom friend would think this is ok? Is there more to the story that makes it not so clear cut?

This thread has served its purpose. Lazy students are lazy.

Close it!

In a few weeks, a faculty member will be telling us about an application where the student answered "Why do you want to become a doctor?" with a copy/cut of the schools mission statement.
