In-state vs out of state determination. (Not for tuition purposes).

I am parent (not a student). I have question on how medical schools determine residency please help if you know any information. Suppose my kid graduated High school from IL and goes to pre-medical in IL. And during the pre-med if we (parents) move to Texas - for admission purposes to med school would they be considered in-state in TX or IL ? They will be our dependents during the pre-med.

i think for the kid--- his residency would be in Texas because he is dependent on the parents. Double check.

Per TMDSAS (http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/medical/residency.html), if you live in Texas for at least a year before he submits his application, he would be considered a Texas resident.

Actually it is by Oct 1, the dead line for the applications. That is parent has to move to texas before 1st of October 1st previous year. You can actually fill out all the details and let them decide if you do have doubt, and not actually declare the residency. I think there is a provision for this in the TMDSAS form. I am not familiar with AMCAS.

We are more concerned whether he will have in-state admission preference or not (we are not concerned about tuition) and as I red TMDSAS will be qualified for in-state tuition.

He would be eligible for both the in-state preference and in-state tuition.

For admission purpose you need to be resident for 12 month by the deadline for the application. For tution purposes it is by the time classes begin. So if he is is resident for application purpose he is likely to be resident for tution purpose as well unless you move out in mean time. Even if he is not IS for application purpose he could be IS for tution purpose, though you have to claim it subsequently after being admitted.

Determining residency for the applicant pool is different than determining residency for tuition purposes. Residency for admission and tuition purposes at a public college or university in Texas is different from residency for voting or taxing purposes.

OK here is the summary, hope this helps some one else also - I spoke with one of the tx med school admission officer and also TMDSAS counselor - Kids will be treated as in-state for both applicant pool and in-state tuition purposes if the parents live in TX for 12 months prior to the application dead line date. They will re-evaluate the in-state tuition every year once admitted.

Would he be IL resident for IL schools, and Texas resident for Texsa schools?

Probably they will loose in-state tuition in IL after we gained status in Tx. But at least the admission is secured.

For the purpose of admission would he have dual residency: IL and TX?
I think on AMCAS he has to choose one residency. But TMDSAS may say he could be Texas resident. My concern is not tution but admission.

Child will be in-state for IL during admission to pre-med as we are residents of IL, and b'se we will establish residency during the pre-med (let's say year 2) in TX, now he will be in-state for TX. That's what I was told. But as I mentioned he may have to forgo in-state tuition for the last 2 years of pre-med. I believe you can change AMCAS during Y3 of premed.
