Hi y'all... I've been accepted and am expected to begin pharmacy school in August. As part of my admission, I'll be going through a drug screening in June. Now all throughout my undergrad years, I was never interested in drug use and steered clear of anything outside of alcohol. Recently, i've been seeing someone who often micro-doses THC via edibles. I really want to try this and perhaps even MDMA with her. It's not that big a deal to me, but I want to have these experiences before I settle into pharmacy school. Given the time frame, what are your thoughts/advice for me? I don't expect to continue habitual usage after entrance. I live in California and will be attending pharmacy school in California. I understand that THC is now legal in California, but the specifics privy to drug screenings are unknown to me. Preliminary research suggests that as a first time user of THC, I would be clear for the drug test come June should I partake in the next month but I have my doubts. Would this be something I could inquire one of my deans about in confidentiality? Thanks for reading!

Marijuana is, unfortunately, still illegal at the federal level. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what your state thinks; testing positive for marijuana will prevent you from getting an intern license or may cause it to be revoked. And if that happens, the chances of you ever getting licensed as a pharmacist are basically zero. No, don’t ask the deans about this! Are you mental? If I were the dean of your school and you asked me that, I’d probably rescind your acceptance due to your lousy judgement.

In reality, most states turn a blind eye to it and won't do anything about it until you get reported for a failed drug test and then it's automatic substance abuse program at your time and expense (something like $10k a year in AZ for PAPA) or revocation. I happen to know for a fact that one of the chains by HR policy keeps failed drug tests and either uses them as blackmail to send pharmacists to worse stores or as a "fire anytime you feel like it" card. Don't even bother applying for the Feds.

And it's ok to have dreams, but I echo everyone else's call for your lack of judgment in this topic.

marijuana may be legal at the state level, but MDMA most certainly is not. Now marijuana, sure, it's no more harmful than alcohol, but MDMA is a totally different level. Have you seen what drug addiction does to people? You don't want to start down that road, by thinking MDMA is "no big deal." And marijuana is off-limits for medical professionals, even for medical use (most states you can and will be fired for marijuana use, even if you have a prescription.) You definitely sound like you are NOT ready for pharmacy school, if you would be even considering messing up your future this way. And get a new SO, you don't need a girlfriend who is a criminal and potentially a future addict.

If it’s a urine drug test you should be fine. Hair follicle? You will probably fail.

Who would be using hair follicle tests for school admission? I mean if you really are trying to look that detailed into your student base, you probably should not be accepting most of those students.

Either way, welcome to real life where your actions have consequences. I very much wish kids would be required to take a year or so off of school before starting college. They need to work a crappy low paying job, experience the real world, and have time some time to relax and enjoy responsibility free life. Who knows maybe the kids would actually figure out what they want to do, instead of whatever crap their school or parents are pushing on them to do.

Also, I hope you have a pharmacy tech job already and know what you are getting into.

Sounds like it will be fine. Go for it!

OP To dean: “Perhaps some MDMA.. it’s not that big of a deal...”
Dean: “I see no issues with having a known recreational drug user have access to a bunch of controlled substances”

Sounds like a likely scenario...

1. You won’t even know for sure if you are taking MDMA or some tainted cocktail that may include heroine and bath salts
2. Why set yourself up for subsequent depression/ brain chemistry issues

What are MDMA’s effects on the brain?

What is happening to this profession? Are these the type of candidates who are really getting accepted?

That has always been there. The dean I had while I was in pharmacy school went to OleMiss specifically to work on the only legal ganja farm in the country and received a "get out of jail free" card on the matter in pharmacognosy. The pharmaceutics professor I had was quietly fired from UMN in his early career for being high all the time (I never learned from what) and did work successfully in the industry (but actually also used his training to brew beer and liquor on the side which was quite illegal in the quantities he did until the late 90s, and possibly other things). I have suspicions (that most of my class shared) that our pharmacologist stories about his "friend" being this hardcore alcoholic were sometimes also personal stories.

The problem is that for every successful, functional addict who you see do good work, there's something like a hundred that sacrificed their talent chasing the high. We give the advice we do to not play the odds.

Welp looks like the opinions are unanimous here lol. You guys didn't need to be so condescending... I don't think you can equate me wanting to try things out at least once to a habitual user. I wasn't asking whether it is okay for me to use it during school and on the job as I do not condone this either, but simply whether my situation/timeline permits me to try before entrance ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't see how trying weed once would have any bearing on my success as a student and subsequent pharmacist. How far do you want to look back in terms of usage? An overwhelming majority of your upcoming health professionals will have done more than I will ever in my life.

Anyway, thanks for your inputs. I've discussed this with several others and have decided against.

You have 2018 grads legitimately worried about finding a job lol and your worried about getting high at least once in your life hahaha. Good luck - based on your priorities you will need it!

People were snide because you suggested asking the dean about the consequences of drug use. Hope that helps.

Keep in mind people who post here are generally more of the conservative kind with respect to recreational drug use... You're in a medical professional forum after all.

To answer your question: it's fine. 2 months is far more than enough time for a one-off experience and a simple urine test. Generally even a couple weeks will suffice.

But yeah, don't ask your dean. That would be a bad call.

I have heard of drug addicts injecting a whole MDMA with a little Joan of Arc mixed into it.

They immediately burst into flames

every addict (or at least many) started with "I will just try it once"

and this comes from me who feels MJ should be legal for rec use

Guess there aren't too many casual MDMA users here....

Yes, I would ask your dean.

I can't wait until the big earthquake happens and snaps that turd of a state right off

*except Baja. I like Baja.

So, a dead French lady?

I was making a hilarious© and original® joke about the use of the word heroine instead of heroin.

Reading this post it i so ludicrous that anyone considering healthcare, let alone pharmacy, would consider using any illegal drugs especially MDMA. What's next after getting your license? Have a bad back and take a percocet rationalizing "I know how it works, people take them all the time."
I live in Colorado and my last job did no urinalysis did I buy any weed? Hell no. I have never seen anyone made smarter from weed. Did see an intelligent friend wash away his college years smoking weed.

If there is anything that will get you in trouble with the BOPs is drug use. Got my license in Alabama where you are required to meet with BOP before its issued and the one thing they brought up was to get help if you have trouble with drugs. My piece of advice is to ditch your friend and pull your head out of your rear.
