question about a part of town in knox

Moses Ave is a very ghetto part of town. I've been in knox 3 years, and I would stay away from east knox and north knox. A few miles north of dowtown is fine and becomes a nice suburban area, but immediate north knox has a lot of crime. West is always a good choice, but lots of traffic. I Prefer south knox. It is cheaper, but more rural (I like it!). If you have any other questions, let me know!

Can you suggest any good apartment complexes in the south or any rental homes available that you know of in the area? And in your opinion, what is an ok distance to travel from home to school? Like is 20minutes too much? Is 10-15 minutes away a good distance? I'm coming from Miami so relative to that everything is pretty close in Knoxville 🙄

I found I rental house about 5 miles from campus and I would say during non-traffic hours it took us about 7-8 minutes to get to the Ag campus. It is in north Knox., and it seems like a decent part of town. The neighborhood seemed quiet and clean. It is about a mile from St. Mary's Hospital. Anyways, my point is that we found a TON of rental houses on Craigslist. I just went on there, found a bunch I wanted to check out and made a trip to Knoxville. We ended up liking most of them, but this one we really liked in particular.

You have to ask yourself how far you want to travel each morning. If you live 20 minutes away, don't forget to add time to get to class on time due to traffic, so 30-45 minutes. The question is do you want to live closer and have less transit time or do you want to live further out, possibly in a nicer area?

There are a lot of apartments and rental homes, so I'm not much help there. Stay away from Fort Saunders area - lots of crime and many undergrads (usually a lot of parties).

I like where I live...the apartment complex leaves something to be desired, but its 10 minutes from school with traffic (15 if traffic is really bad) and right near the Strip.

I live about 15-20 minutes west of school, but the way I go, I'm able to avoid Kingston Pike and the Interstate, which is good for cutting down on traffic.

The traffic coming up from the south on Alcoa Highway can get bad. At some points it is limited access, at others it is not. Turning left on the parts where it is not limited access can be difficult in times of high traffic and you feel like you're playing chicken with you life. (There are few stoplights to turn at until you get to Maryville.) That's one of the reasons I chose not to live down there. So you probably won't want to turn left onto it for your commute in the morning, since you'll be coming at rush hour. However, since you'll most likely be going home mid-afternoon before rush hour, you should be okay to turn left then. Just FYI...

North Knoxville has similarly priced apartments and a lot more favorable traffic patterns, so you may also want to consider living up there.

I live in Northwest Knox (sounds like just west of where you found a place Kat0303). I am 8 miles from campus, 13 minute commute. On the worst of days, traffic-wise, it takes me 20 minutes. I can be to the mall within 15 minutes. In fact, there's not many places in Knoxville I can't get to within 15 minutes. The only real traffic seems to be south of the city on Alcoa Highway. The locals call it "I'll-Kill-Ya-Highway" for this reason.

I definitely think it is necessary to come out, look at the places, and time the commute. But then, I would find more than a 20 minute commute unacceptable because we are going to do this day after day for 4 years.

So I explored Knox with my two future roomies yesterday and we found this big old house that we really like and the only thing I'm concerned about is the location. It is near Jefferson Ave and Winona St. It's in the NE area of town but I'm wondering if this will really be a problem. We drove from the house to the vet school this morning in 12 minutes, we realize it will take a bit longer on a morning in rush hour.
Any thoughts/comments?

I am not familiar with that area. The only thing I can suggest is to hang out in the neighborhood a bit. Take a walk. Get the feel. If it feels safe and comfortable, then it probably is.
