In canada all of your courses are graded, however if you didnt do so well on a course you might be able to replace the grade with a "pass" (this has limits course)

I was wondering if that is the same in the states? like do you get to select which grading scheme your course will be or is it pre determined

You can elect to take a class P/F sometimes. Depends on your uni. Usually can't for classes in your major, but it was more common during COVID.
