hi i have just decided during my ongoing Child Neur Elective to go ahead and apply to child Neur as well. The Problem is I applied to most programs i was interested in for Ped. Categorical already !!
Questions..
1. Is it a good idea to apply for Ped Neuro Categ(5y) and Ped. Categ (3y) in the same Hospital?? though they're separate programs.. does it reflect badly on the ped categ programs when they find out you've applied to ped neuro categ in their hosp as well and vice - versa?
2. I realized child Neur has so many joint advanced + prelim .. so I will have to apply to the Ped. Prelim as well at a Program i have applied for Ped. Categorical already??
Does applying to prelim ped neur(2yr) at a program where you've also applied for Ped. Categ(3y) have a bad impression again??

I am interested in Ped Neur. but only after end of this elective i'll know more.. but i do need to apply now..
coz i snooze i lose !

I don't think it will be problem especially if you're applying to categorical programs. This is the first year that child neuro is fully on ERAS (last year they were 1/2 on AUP) and a lot of the categorical programs are still having applicants submit separate applications to gen peds. I'd just make sure that you inform the gen peds programs that you're applying for categorical child neuro because I imagine it may not be evident in your PS.

As far as advanced programs and applying to the gen peds 2-yr prelim at the same institution, I can't really say because I only applied to categorical programs. I don't know if gen peds programs will balk at losing you a year early or not. But I will say that a lot of the child neuro programs are categorical now since moving to ERAS so I imagine you could get a pretty good spread of programs in your application. Almost all the big academic child neuro programs are categorical now with only a few exceptions. Go to the child neuro society website and they have a pdf of all the child neuro programs and how many categorical or advanced spots are offered.

Best of luck! I'm doing child neuro as well. Hope to see you on the interview trail!

Hey that was some helpful.. and you're right i haven't mentioned that in PS.

I'm sure that the Gen. Pediatrics PD will also know that you've applied to PED Neuro. Categorical since for 2 yrs we will be rotating in gen peds so i'm sure the peds neuro faculty will share application with gen peds.. and then they might be like oh i have seen this application before???

So i guess the Gen Ped Categorical will then not be interested in calling you for interview right ??
So in short applying to Ped. neuro Categorical in a program will be ruining your chances to Gen Ped. Categ in the same program ??

I wanted to know that since i havent fully decided on Ped Neur , so i dont wanna ruin my chances of Gen Peds is a good program by applying to Ped Neur there.

Hmmmm. If you haven't fully decided on Peds Neuro I'd probably just stick with categorical Peds and apply to Advanced child neuro spots during PGY-2. Conversely you could apply to categorical child neuro and if you change your mind switch to categorical peds during PGY-2. The second option is probably one that child neuro programs would be less pleased with because it leaves them a fellow short but it's not like you're going in with the intention to bail on child neuro.

But you're right though I don't think it's feasible to apply to categorical peds and categorical neuro (or advanced neuro for that matter) separately and independently at the same institution. There's at least coordination of interviews at nearly all categorical child neuro programs because you have to interview with both peds & neuro. They will assume you're doing categorical child neuro.

yeah. thats what i thought. i'll give it another thought for a day and decide what to do. Need to modify my PS a little bit to incorporate something neuro related as well.

Thanks for the help 🙂

FYI, at least one hospital's peds dept has informed me that they are aware that i'm applying cat child neuro at their institution, but they will be interviewing me with the consideration that i could stay on as cat peds (you have to apply to both cat child neuro & cat peds at this hostpital). and gen peds called me for interview earlier than child neuro did...

so i think both programs are going to be well aware that you're applying categorical into child neuro AND peds. but not sure that it hurts you.

but i agree with NTF... it seems to me that if you haven't decided for sure, it'd be a better idea to go cat peds and apply into adv child neuro later.

good luck! and if you decide child neuro, maybe i'll see you on the interview trail!
