Hi. I'm currently doing an informal post bacc and is registering for classes at Cal State. I was wondering whether D-school will care if you take lower division bio/chem versus upper division. And even if they prefer upper division bio/chem classes, how would they know which class number are upper division for each school since all schools have different class numbering.

Hopefully someone will help me with this question soon since I'm registering tonight.

Much appreciated. Thanks

Just look at your schools prerequisites and make sure the class names are the same in which they require. I believe it is pretty normal for classes to be numbere 100 or 1000 and that indicates a freshman course, likewise a 400 or 4000 level course would be senior. I never paid attention to the class numbers, I always went by class names and made sure they matched up with what my schools required. Hope that helps.

also , if any1 knows if they care if you take upper chemistry classes instead of upper biology classes

The schools will see the class name along w/ the course #. I'm sure AdCom's know what classes are upper level and which are intro classes. I would advise you to take both upper level Bio and Chem classes; it can't hurt. I would think it would be hard to gain admission with just the bare minimum pre-req's, but it just depends on what your "whole" application looks like.

In my post-bac work I took a ton of upper level Bio classes, as well as upper level Chem classes, but I was also seeking a second-degree in Chem w/ a minor in Bio just as a back-up. I ended up not having to complete my second-degree this semester due to multiple acceptances and school's not caring whether I completed the second-degree or not. In all my interviews they seemed to be impressed with the amount of classes I took during my post-bac. I would definitely recommend to atleast take upper-level courses like BioChem, Immunology, Cell Bio, Micro, etc. They are all pretty relevant classes, plus they are a great foundation to study for the DAT.

I agree...if you have finished your prereqs already try and take courses such as microbiology, microbiology lab, cell biology, immunology, histology or anatomy. I've called dental schools before and asked them to look over my application to get some feedback, and most of them were pleased to see that I had taken these courses and have done well.

Even better...get a LOR from one of these professors 🙂

Thank you to everyone who have responded to my questions. My other question is. What if I've already taken classes such as microbio, anatomy, physiology, etc at my previous university. Would taking those classes again during my post-bacc be weird? Even though I know those classes look good on the transcript, but retaking them might seem like I'm not challenging myself enough? What do you think?

Thanks for the feedback.

Anybody have any suggestions? This question is important in helping me determine what classes to sign up for next semester.

Any advice would be great.
