One of my advisors told me that if couples matching, it's better to rank "realistic" (e.g., upper mid tier) programs higher than uber-competitive programs. I was wondering if this is true or not. I've always heard the dogma that you should rank your top choice program as number 1, no matter what. But this advisor said that it is a bit more complicated for couples than that. Is that true? Anyone heard of this?

Thanks

... would also appreciate any tips on couples matching anybody might have. (IM and PEDs in my case).

Your advisor is giving you terrible advice.
