question about dental school application

I was about to apply for detroit mercy school of dentistry, they used to have their deadline as march 15...but when I checked in their website they cahnged it in to march 1st 🙁 ...is it too late or me to apply for their school ? I've got most of my reqs ready, Im gettin my bach degree in bio this year, and im taking my DAT by May 5th..

Are you applying for this cycle or next cycle? If you're taking your DAT in May, I'm assuming you are applying to enter for fall 2010, in which case, you cannot send in your AADSAS application until June 1st, so no worries, you're in good shape.

Im applying for this year 2009 🙁 ...actually what happened..I applied for the podiatry schools...I had my applications ready for the POD..but I wasnt very happy about my choice in podiatry..my heart was falling dentistry sinnce it was my 1st choice..I shadowed both a dentist and a podiatrist...both of them are great careers...but I liked dentistry better...so im screwed for this year 🙁😡

Uhh, on a side track, if you can't get into this cycle, do you just take a year off until next cycle or what?

it's not for nothing.... you saved yourself a lot of angst from following the wrong career path. think of this year as your saviour.

Hey Ashcash,

I feel like you might be confused about when you apply. You really want to take the DAT before you apply or very soon after... they will not even consider your application until your DAT is done. A good timeline would be:

May 5th - your DAT
Mid-May - Open up AADSAS/Fill out App
June 1st - Submit AADSAS... Make sure you contact your school in order to get transcripts sent to them and schools that request their own (like UDM)
July-August - Secondaries
Fall/Winter - Interview time

It is honestly very wishful thinking to even consider to START applying now. I know UDM's class was full before the end of February, and many many schools fill up sooner. For example, I applied in June, and was not accepted to schools until January.

Contach is right--you're in a great position for the 2010 cycle, which means you would only have to work for a year.

yeah, as above posters mentioned, you should definitely spend some time researching about dental school admissions.

although they say deadline is march 1st or 15th (it doesnt really matter), everyone (i mean pretty much everyone that knows about the process) apply between May - October of the year before that deadline. After October is considered pretty much late in the process (although still possible to gain admission) and after December 1st is definitely considered pretty much too late.

Schools give out interviews starting August throughout January / February
and March is pretty much done.

Every schools make decisions on who to accept for their class by December 1st (of the year before the deadline, so in this cycle's case it was decided in December 1st of 2008), and from there, some people get multiple acceptances and they decline some other offers and more seats open up and they will be filled throughout the winter time.

At this point of time, even the people who had interview are either rejected or waitlisted and they will not interview you, so please save your money and wait 2 months. I had 2 interviews (one in August and November) and one of the schools has already filled their class completely on December 1st of 2008 and the other school I am waitlisted, and I applied in May of 2008.


I recommend you research many threads on this forum and also purchase ADEA Guide to Dental School Admission and also go speak with your pre-dental advisors at your school.
