Do pediatricians recommend infants hold off on exposure to things like peanut butter and sesame oil (eg in hummus) until after 6 months because earlier exposure will cause the allergy? Many parents start feeding kids solids at 4 months for fun. Eggs?

Pediatricians recommend starting with single ingredient foods, like mashed sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, squash, etc, in order to tell if there is a reaction. Hummus and most peanut butters do not make the single ingredient list.

And it's okay to start feeds kids 'solids' at 4 months provided they have head control and interest in eating something other than breastmilk or formula.

There is currently some literature that early exposure to peanut dust reduces allergies in high risk kids, but it's not well defined enough to be policy for the General Pediatricians yet.

The allergists I know are really excited by this research and the growing biochemical model of allergy formation.

The general pediatricians I know are really dubious after 2-3 decades of shifting, contradictory research on food introduction.

Science is exciting.
