I want to increase the memory from 512MB to 1GB on the Sony Vaio TX 650. It has a max capacity of 1.5GB. The memory part of its specs says it currently has: 512MB PC-3200 400MHz DDR2 (512 MB x 1) (Expandable to 1.5GB)

Does anyone know if this means that there is an extra slot open to install another 512MB chip or if I have to buy a full 1GB chip and remove the current one?

Thanks!

here's the specs website by the way:

Crucial makes high quality parts at very good prices. If I'm understanding it correctly, the 512MB your laptop came with is built-in and can't be removed, and your laptop has one empty slot.

Looks like $65.99 through Crucial. Great company (they make and test their own memory in-house, and I've ordered from them before, very popular).

I found some generic RAM in the $50 range, but RAM is one thing not to go generic on. Happy upgrading.

That's what I thought as well, but when I looked through the User Manual for this model, when discussing memory upgrades, it mentioned removing the existing module and putting a new module in its place...

However, 1.5 would be a very strange number unless there was 512 onboard and a slot that takes a 1 GB SIMM/DIMM...

Thanks for the input. Do you have this model of the Sony Vaio? If so, what do you think of it and where did you buy it?

Thanks.
