I have a question I am a new graduate and do not posses a Dental license in any state. I will be taking the Florida/nerb licensure in Nov. I don't want to sit around the house til November. What are my options as far as employment as a Dentist? I am even willing to go to Alaska or New Mexico and work in undeserved areas.

Thanks any help would greatly appreciated.

Well, without a full-dental license in the state of Florida, you still have a few options and it depends on where you wish to locate yourself in the state.

If you wish to stay in West Palm Beach the following is an excellent option:

If you wish to go to the Hialeah area, your options are much greater and should have more success:

If you wish not to pursue these excellent options listed, then again, I suppose you could wait until after November and get a full license.

is this a common problem that most dental grads deal with? is it not possible to have a license to practice as soon as you graduate?? or must everyone wait to take a state/regional exam some time after the fact?

don't mean to hijack thread, im just curious

it's very rare to have a license all ready to go as soon as you graduate. School's have to wait until you have finished your program and officially awarded your degree, and the state boards will take time to process and grant licensure.

That is one of the reasons I recommend a post grad program...
takes the pressure off a MUST PAST EXAM the first time
allows you to get state boards/licensure; DEA #s ready before practicing
allows more time to decide were to practice, look for better offers, decide if you want a speciality

BUT only take a program you want and will be willing to complete the entire program... its not fair to others

While this is true, don't get the wrong idea. It is not usually, like you have to wait until November. Most state boards get this done in 2-4 weeks. Our board (Oklahoma) takes 2 weeks from graduation.

So typically, how long does it take, in days, for a dental graduate to start legally capable of practicing after receiving his DMD/DDS diploma?

Each state is different. In Delaware, those taking the June 4-5 board (if they meet all other requirements) will be able to practice by July 1.

Ok, thanks for all the replies.
