Hi,
I am starting pharmacy school in august. A friend of mine an(RPh) loaned me a his drug cards. I am confused on how I should go about learning them. Anybody have a good system, or do I just wait for that part of school to study? He advised me to do it by class, if this is a good approach where do I find a list of drug classes to start sorting the drug cards into?

Any help appreciated

If you don't work in a pharmacy, just learn them as they're assigned to you in school. At my school, they assign them by drug class.

Do you have a list of drug classes? Or where could I find one?

The drug class should be somewhere on the card. For instance, look for "anti-hypertensive" on the metoprolol card.

Return these cards to your friend. Spend the next month relaxing with friends and/or family. Learn your top 200 once school starts. Not worth the effort up front.

You don't need to learn it now, you will learn it all in school. Before pharmacy school, I tried to study it but it did not work because I quickly forgot it.

It really depends on how you're willing to study to learn about the drugs. You will come across everything you need to know in classes, but if you are familiar with the drugs ahead of time, it will help, since a lot of it will just be a review of what you know already.

Best thing I did to help remember drug cards was to get a job in a pharmacy. It will help you remember the names, and you can also read the common uses of the drug or it's category (if your pharmacy prints that information). Try to relax though before school starts. Your school doesn't expect you to know the information, so don't use your summer to learn it. Just relax 🙂

thanks for all the replys. I will not study veryhard ( since I am stuck taking my last prereq in a compressed summer class) After that I only have a week before orientation starts 🙂

o.k. Ill go try to play WOW, maby go fishing, and drink beer!

If you really must study (I know I did, despite receiving the same advice on these forums), don't try to memorize. Try to organize. Make lists. Learn what these drugs have in common with each other. Make associations. Memorizing card-by-card isn't very efficient.
