My classmate and I work with the same PI and we worked on very related, but different, projects. We both got accepted to do an oral presentation at a local conference.

If my name is on her presentation, am I allowed to list her presentation at the conference under my CV?

I don't want my CV to look sketchy, and I am unsure as the rules of listing things (not much research experience).

Thanks for you help!

Best

For presentations, they are cited the same as publications. All meaningful contributors should be listed. So she may be first author but you would be a second author in that case. Especially if you are presenting it together.

Thanks for your help! Additionally, I am unsure if there are limitations to what can come out of a single research experience.

So far, the research I have worked on this summer has been presented in poster format at my med school's symposium. It has been presented at a national conference in poster format and it will be presented as an oral presentation at am upcoming local conference.

Is this all allowed ? On my CV, does it look weird if I have 3 presentations all with the same title , but different locations and formats of presentation ?

Take what I say with a grain of salt, but personally, I'd list it once - just the national conference. School symposiums are a joke and shouldn't be listed unless it's all you have (disclaimer: this is just my opinion). Yes, it would look weird to have the same presentation three times and would look like you are trying to pad your numbers.

No, Amba is wrong. List everything. It is absolutely normal for one research experience to generate multiple "citations" such as a publication, a conference, and a symposium. Definitely cite them all on your application. Yes, you are padding your resume. But that is the whole point of doing research, let's be honest.

This is with the caveat though that the different citations have different values. Those that look at your application will definitely count your citations - ten looks better than five. But they are not stupid. They also look at the quality of your citations. A couple good published papers will beat five poster presentations.

So definitely cite everything, but don't be complacent. Do more!

Thanks so much for the help, patientvomits! I appreciate it!

I have a followup question:

A couple months ago, my mentor encouraged me to apply for two national competition and I recently found out that they both accepted my submission for a poster presentation. Is it unethical or looked down up upon to present at both conferences? I am new to research I don't want to do the improper thing.

Additionally, I am wondering how all this will be entered on residency applications. If I have one poster presentation at a local symposium, an oral presentation at a regional conference and then a national poster presentation....does this call count as one "publication" because they have the same title ? I would hate to misrepresent the work I did, especially on such an important application.

No, you can present similar or even the same work at two conferences. It is a little unusal the PI would have the exact same research at 2 different conferences, unless it is groundbreaking or high impact, but irrespective, it can be done.

And no, you would list the presentations as separate on the ERAS application, but it would be one project under the "Research Experiences" tab and most people will few it as one presentation.

You might want to look into the competition websites and their guidelines. Sometimes they may state that previously published/presented/accepted abstracts are not eligible unless they are updated with new additional information.

@SurfingDoctor Thanks for your quick reply! I appreciate someone with such weight on the forums answering my questions.

@Lya - that is a great consideration.

from their website : "Original abstracts that either have or have not been presented at other meetings including ACP Chapters/Regions will be considered." I guess this means I can still present it. However I wanted to ask if you two think there is any benefit in presenting a poster for a second time at a national conference.

I missed what the conferences were but generally speaking national conferences hold more weight that regional or local conferences. In the context of a residency application, I'm not sure it'll make a huge difference because the people reading your application may not know the difference.

The conferences were the American College of Nuclear Medicine and the American College of Physicians National Abstract Competition . Im just wondering if it is a good opportunity because the ACNM conference felt like 45 quick minutes of standing next to my poster for nearly 2 days of travel and make up work.

I wish I could find out how I am supposed to list it on residency apps

They get listed under presentations/abstracts.

The other thing to remember is oral presentations, i.e. giving a talk, is better than a poster presentation. And of course, published manuscripts supersede both.

As said above, you can list them as 2 different poster presentations (with the same title of your abstract). But in research experiences, you will discuss 1 project.

Attending the second conference is certainly a good opportunity. Try to get the most out of it by networking with other attendees.

thanks so much for all the help! I will definitely think about it some more!
