hi everyone,

quick question about LORs. for my anesthesiology LOR i was going to ask an attending who I worked with in a pain clinic. do you think this is OK to use as my anesthesiology LOR or should I try to find someone who still practices anesthesiology to write my LOR. I know it may sound silly but I just wanted your advice. thanks!

I would recommend getting as strong as possible personal LOR from an operating room-type academic anesthesiologist. You should have LORs from more than 1 anesthesiologists if possible, pain clinic is great for 1 of those. Your LORs are important, and they will help you at programs where the letter writer is known. I do know of someone who matched very well with his only anesthesia letter being from a doc he did research with, but although he matched at a great program, other programs mentioned the lack of 'clear commitment' to the field, and he did have a stellar application in other aspects.

So put your time in, get to know the field with a solid commitment and a varied experience, and have someone vouch for you. Otherwise, it will end up hurting you, but won't likely be fatal.

Can't hurt to have him write one. Remember, just because he writes you a letter doesn't mean you have to use it. If you end up getting a better letter from someone else, great, but if you don't, you have that letter to fall back on. Don't drag your feet when it comes to asking attendings for letters. Some will write them for you the same day, while others may take a month(or more).
