im currently on surgery rotation but will be doing a few weeks in anesthesia as a specialty. this is a community hospital with no residency program, and as a student you dont really get to interact with the chair of anesthesia here. my question is should i ask the chair for a letter after doing the few weeks or can i just get a letter from one of the attendings i work with?

cool thanks

but does a chair's letter really weigh a lot more?

a letter is generally more meaningful if the person writing it knows you well and has worked with you. if the chair doesn't know you at all and hasn't worked with you, then i would ask someone else who does. also, the chair of a community department is less likely to be as well known (unless you know he has close former ties to academia) if the department lacks a residency program, making the distinction between chair and any other attending less valuable.
