Hello, I heard from unofficial sources and SDN that Liberty has an MCAT average of approximately 498-499.

However, their minimum MCAT is a 497 with a 123 CARS section.

I guess I don't understand how this is possible. Maybe other DO schools are similar in this way. One of two things have to be happening:

1.) Applicants with lower than 497 MCAT are accepted "regularly", not just exceptions

or

2.) Their official MCAT average is much higher than 498-499 and the unofficial sources/SDN might be mistaken?

Which is it? Or is there a third possibility? Thanks!

I'm on board with that.

I just don't understand why so many people would apply there with less than a 497 MCAT if Liberty explicitly says that's their minimum.

Are people just applying to liberty without caring about Liberty's 497 minimum? Seems ballsy because of the auto reject they're risking.

Because Liberty seems to be the DO school of last resort for applicants. They fill up their class every year, but I'm sure they accept some very weak students in order to accomplish that. Drill down on their website. I believe 16 students in their last reported class failed the COMLEX. As far as I know, that is the highest fail rate for all DO schools.

This applies even to MD schools: you would be surprised at how many people apply with a "you never know" or "for ****s and "giggles" or "nothing ventured, nothing gained " or even "maybe they won't have enough people apply"

I would imagine MD schools don't have the same issue Liberty does in terms of strong applicants applying. I think that's the main difference.

I guess if someone has a lowly MCAT of 494-496, they have to have a chance for Liberty with an average MCAT of 498-ish.

If Liberty is accepting many people that aren't reaching their minimum, then that encourages people with below 497 to apply there. Does it not?

Apparently, yes.

Would applying there with a stronger MCAT, say 507-509 be useless if their MCAT scores are that low?

My MCAT was over a 510 (keeping it anonymous as possible), and I was accepted to LUCOM. So no, it's not "useless".
