Some of the programs I applied in EM are 3 years, some are 3 plus a separate intern year and others are 4years at the same institution. So I have been interviewing for both categorical and Preliminary positions. If I were to match into the 3 year program(PGY2-PGY-4) and preliminary year(instead of the PGY1-3 or PGY1-4 format programs) my e-mail would say that I have succesfully match into my preliminary and categorical position or will it say only that I have succesfully matched?

It will say one of the following:

1) you have matched into your Prelim year but not your Advanced year
2) you have matched into your Advanced year but not your Prelim year
3) you have matched into both your Prelim and Advanced year
4) sorry, you have not matched

To clarify this:

If a person is attempting to match a specialty that is categorical and requires a prelim year and that person ranks a number of prelim only programs at the end of their MAIN match list (as backups), what will the email say if you match one of those programs? Is the system able to discern that you were unsuccessful at matching your categorical year or will it assume that because you matched off of your main list that you were simply successful at matching?

Thanks.

If everything is on the same ROL, the email will either say, "Congratulations you have matched" or "We regret to inform you that you did not match".

So are we advised, then, not to rank preliminary years on our main ROL? While I would like to have a definite position for next year, I think its more important that I get a chance to scramble should I not match into a categorical year. Based on what you're saying, I would have no idea whether or not I needed to scramble. Is this really the case?

I had a friend (good stories always start like this), who last year, came back with a frown on black monday. He said he'd been told that he matched into a preliminary position but not a categorical. His list was full of categorical programs, with one prelim at the end of his match list, but still on the same ROL. So I think you'd get option 1 as described by Scapula.

Yup, just confirmed with NRMP. This is going to be one helluva St. Paddy's Day to remember.

Actually, if you match cat and prelim, it simply says "Congrats, you have matched".

I speak from experience last year. After reading similiar replies as above , i figured it was unlikely that I matched where I did since it did not say you matched prelim and advance..

In the end, we were estatic that we did match all four years in MS as we figured it hadnt happened (base on the you have matched email) when we REALLY wanted to be here for all four....just figured we had no shot on that first year....

On St. Paddy's day does anyone know what time we should be expecting this email?

I believe it is noon, Eastern time.

Sorry, I tried but could not follow this thread.
I applied to categoricals pgy1-4
adv + supplemental prelims
and on my primary rol, I ranked pgy1 only after all my cat. and (adv+prelim)

For example
Main List
1) Prgram #1 Categorical
2) Prgram #1 adv + (pgy1 #1 followed by pgy1 #2)
3) Prgrams #2 Adv +(pgy1 #1, pgy1 #2)
4) Program #2 Cat
4) pgy1 prelim 1
5) pgy1 prelim #2

So can somene explain what I will see in my email if I match in
a) My #1 program Categorical
b) My #1 adv and a pgy1
c) just a pgy1

After looking at the NRMP page I'm still a little confused...

If my ROL looks like this:
1. Prog 1 Categorical
2. Prog 2 Adv (no supp. prog listed)
3. Prog 3 Categorical

What would my email look like if I matched into #2... "you matched" (because I didn't list any prelim progs on a supp. list) or "you matched adv. but no prelim."

If I match at #2, I plan to scramble into an osteopathic intern year. I would much rather know about this situation on the 17th, rather than have to wait 'til th 20th.
thanks if anyone can shed any light...

What does "no supplemental program listed" mean? Does it mean that you did not have to fill out a supplemental list for PGY1 year? In which case if you match into your #2 program you don't have to match into a prelim year as they go hand-in-hand. Therefore, if the above is correct, then the email will read "Congratulations, you have matched". If the initial quote means that you have to match into a prelim year and you match into your #2 program, then the email will read "Congratulations, you have matched into an advanced position, but have not matched into a preliminary position". Good luck.

ok, this might be splitting hairs, but does anyone know what the subject line will say? Will it say :
"An email from the NRMP?
"Congratulations!"
"We regret to inform you..."

I just want to be prepared as i open my inbox that day!

From talking to current residents, the email heading is BLANK which adds to the worry and paranoia.

I actually dug up my e-mail from last year. It was dated/timed Monday, 3/12/07, 10:50 AM central standard time (I was living in Chicago). The subject was "Did I Match?" The body of my e-mail read the following:

Congratulations! You have matched.

Check the Match Site at https://services.nrmp.org/r3/ on Thursday, March 15, 2007, at 1:00 PM eastern time to find out where you matched. Because you are matched, you do not have access to any information about unfilled programs.

Yup...worst possible subject line. Everybody gets the same one, match or no. I guess it gets you to open it but, come on, who's not going to open an email from NRMP on Un-Match Day?
