Hi, I know you aren't all vet's yet, but I still thought maybe you can help me. My dog is a 2 year old Maltese. Yesterday I gave her a bath around 8pm. I took her out, she seemed fine. We played fetch for about 10 minutes, then when she went after the toy, she yelped. I looked her over and didn't see anything wrong. Then she yelped again, and started pawing at her eye. Since then, all she has done is layed in my lap with her one eye squinted shut. She hasn't wanted any treats or to play. I tried squirting some saline solution in it, but I don't know if I got any in or not. Her eye doesn't look overly red or swollen or anything, but it's clearly bothering her. Any suggestions as to what's wrong or what I should do? Should I take her to a vet? (i'm at school, and her vet is back home, so I haven't known who to call). Thanks!!!

could be a couple of things wrong - probably a stick poked or scratched the eye, something could have gotten in it and is still there, or an insect could have bitten or stung her. i would suggest taking her to a vet. if you cant take her to her normal vet, go to a vet close by. you wouldnt want any serious damage to occur to her eye.

thanks, she has an appointment for this afternoon at a local vet.

let me know how she is. good luck. 🙂

I took her to the vet yesterday evening, and they put dye in her eye and looked at it with the black light, and there was most definately a cut/scratch. I was surprised at how large it was, actually. So, they gave me some antibiotic ointment to put in it twice a day, and one of those lovely lampshade looking things to make her wear so she won't paw at it. I have to take her back on Friday to get it checked again. I can tell she's already feeling better though, so I feel much better too 🙂

im glad she's feeling better. and hey, the e-collars are quite fashionable. she's stylish. 🙂

Ahh! Ditto on the e-collars being cute. I had to put one on a cat the other day... while the cat was purring and mashing it's face against my hand. So. Weird.
