For example, the state of PA requires 500 non-school intern hours to be completed for licensure. What I want to know is that do these 500 hours have to be a paid internship or does volunteering count as well?

I don't know about PA, but MA will accept either.

Ahh, I thought it would be the same policy everywhere. Thanks for clarifying that.

Read your state regulations, speak to one of your counsellors or pharmacy law professors, or just call your state BoP.

PA requires the hours to be spent in the pharmacy. Volunteering is OK, however it has to be at the pharmacy, not a regular hospital volunteer. Most places won't let volunteers perform a full scope of intern duties though, so you're better off getting a paid job if possible. Also, PA requires hours to be in places where dispensing is performed (so pharmaceutical industry doesn't count). Still, you should check with the board.

In addition you have to a preceptor and register that the BOP BEFORE your hours will count.
