Hi,
I posted earlier in SDN's India forum but I didnt get any reply......
I'm from India and I completed my MBBS (which is equivalnet to the MD in the US) and I completed my post graduation in Neurology in India itself. I was practicing as a Neurologist in India for one year. I would like to come to the US and practice as a Neurologist, what are the different procedures I'll have to go through to do this?
Thanks
Vasu

Licensure to practice is controlled by the individual states. Generally a foreign medical grad must complete postgraduate training in the US, even if they completed postgraduate training in their country. Short form- you'll have to pass the licensure exam and get into training here for at least 1 and more likely 3 years. Board certification in your specialty (which is not required to practice) will probably require completing a residency

Start with the following:

www.ecfmg.org stands for educational council for foreign medical graduates, you'll have to deal with these folks to take the United State Medical Licensure Exam, which you'll have to pass to attempt to get postgraduate training.

and http://www.fsmb.org/usmle_eliinitial.html. FSMB stands for federation of state medical boards, this is an umbrella organization for information exchange. The state boards are independent state government agencies that are not subject to regulation by fsmb. The page I've linked is to a summary of the requirements of each state.

and www.abpn.com is the site of the american board of psychiatry and neurology,. It has the requirements for board certification for the specialties.

good luck.

Agree with the above post - most likely, you'll have to complete a neurology residency here to work as a neurologist. To obtain a residency position, you'll have to take Step 1, Step 2 CK, Step 2 CS, and Step 3. This is under the ECFMG link that BKN gave.
