I was wondering if DPM residents are able to moonlight for extra money and if anyone who is currently a resident does moonlight. Anyone have any experience with this?

I know that residents do "moonlight" because many have told me that they do so. However, I am unaware of the exact details.

Moonlighting policies will vary between residency programs. Many of the Podiatry residency programs do not permit moonlighting for a variety of reasons. One of the reason is malpractice insurance. A hospital usually pays for malpractice insurance that covers your patient care activities related to the residency program only. If you decide to moonlight for a Podiatrist in private practice that does not have an agreement with the residency program or hospital, your medical malpractice from the residency program will not cover your patient care in that office. In order for you to moonlight at that private practice, either you or the Podiatrist would need to purchase separate medical malpractice insurance. There are a few Podiatry residency programs that do permit moonlighting, you need to inquire more about it from those programs.

By the way, if you decide to get a paid tutoring job or work for a Seven Eleven, etc.. on the side while doing your residency training, I do not consider this to be moonlighting.

My residency program prohibits moonlighting. In fact, all of the residency programs (MD/DO) based out of my hospital are not permitted to moonlight. In the annual APMSA Residency Program Survey book, you can find out if a particular residency program that you are interested in permits moonlighting or not.

Lastly, I do know of a few residents that do moonlight without the residency program knowing. These residents are in residency programs that do not permit moonlighting. You have to be careful of this because if you do get caught, you can be kicked out of the residency program.

Most residency programs do not allow moonlighting. In fact, in most it would be difficult to do anyway. (By the way, that extra job at 7-11 is in fact moonlighting.) After the 80-100 hours/week from the residency, and spare time trying to stay up with reading and studying, there really is no time for a part time job.
