One of my friends who interviewed at Ross said that from the videos they showed of ross, it looked like all that you will be doing on the island is studying. They don't have anything fun on the island and its quite primitive out there...no milk. It kind of freaked me out totally. I tend to get stressed out a lot and have to do something fun to keep myself sane. I would love some inputs from those who go there

The milk that's available on the island is the ultra high temperature (UHT) variety. Tastes a little different but they have a much longer shelf life and can be stored at room temperature before opening. I think Parmalat tastes the best especially when refrigerated.

If you like outdoor activities, there's hiking, waterfalls, scuba diving, and horseback riding to be done in Dominica. People play basketball, tennis, and flag football, soccer, volleyball, etc. on campus. Lots of clubs and organizations you can join. Nightlife scene is quite limited from what I understand. No movie theaters but SGA puts on movies every so often in one of the classrooms. Sometimes, my friends and I just got together to go out and eat, watch a DVD that we brought down, play card games, etc. A good group of friends is key.

thanks awdc... that makes me feel much better. I just want something to do to relax. Also, someone said something about the place being a dangerous place for females. any truth in it?

The same rules apply on the island as they would if you were in any relatively remote area of the U.S. ( or in a city for that matter) ie. do not walk along unlit trails by yourself after dark. Only accept "transport" rides ( taxis) from drivers you will come to know etc. It is pretty safe during the day. My girlfriend frequently took day trips to Roseau by herself, and never had any issues. Common sense will take you far with respect to safety, and in all fairness the locals tended to leave us to ourselves, save for the few beggars you would expect to find anywhere.

As for things to do to relax, I agree with Awdc. There are also weekend getaways to Barbados, St. Maarten, etc, trips to les saints, guadeloupe. Then there are always post-mini parties, wine bar, coconuts etc. Best advice is to make good friends, and between all the things listed and studying you will soon be off the island. Good luck to you.

P.S. Take advantage of the scuba diving....truly incredible.

So I got this little informational excerpt from princeton review that says: Ross offers licensing in all 50 states and all provinces in Canada. Isn't this true for all of the carribean schools? You can still obtain your license in any state if you go say to St. George's right?

St. Georges: yes
All caribbean schools: No

Currently I believe Ross, SGU and one or two other carib schools are deemed worthy of licensure in all of the states. Texas and california are pretty stringent with repect to licensure requirements. When I started at Ross, there was issues with their licensure in Texas.Had to do with the necessity of research at a teaching institution Thankfully all of that has been sorted out.

No. Outside of SGU, Ross, and AUC, there are loads of loads of schools you want to avoid.

LOL, coconuts??? is that place still standing? wow.

Martinique (spelling ?) was much more fun than guadeloupe. St. Maarten was awsome.

Diving is one of the best in the world.
But be careful.

lets see...you can study at home...study at the library..study at the beach...and..study while you eat, sleep, ...etc...
tahts bout it....and you can snorkle, scuba dive, and fish....

I know this is an old thread, but in case someone new comes along, you can (surprisingly) do a lot. And I think they list the population now at ~80,000.

Scuba Club, Sailing Club - which charters impressive catamarans for a 3 day getaway after first mini, volleyball, soccer, football, weights, yoga on the beach, ab classes, snorkeling, hiking, cricket, tennis, a restaurant (Tomato) offers one day cruises to the Saints (or somewhere similar) with mimosas, bloody marys, appetizers, open bar on the way back *smile* twice each semester, movie nights, a lot of student organizations (AMSA, Muslim, Jewish, ER, Black Students, Medical Imaging, and a bunch of others that I can't remember), Coconuts is still a popular party place, Maimes Sulfur Springs, Fusion, beach bashes...basically, we make the best of what we can with what we've got.

Ross is basically it's own community. The town is really small and it's almost all students, so there are plenty of people to see and plenty of things to do. Everyone goes to campus to hang out, study, relax, etc. We're all in the same boat so we may as well make the best of it. We smile but we're honest and few people have reservations about lashing out about Dominica. We're biding our time until we get back to what we know best and where we feel the most comfortable. Until then, it's one day at a time.
