I just got bad news that I failed comlex II written, and plan to retake and pass before I graduate.

My question is, when I receive my residency contract will they ask that I pass the comlex before the signing or my graduation?

Will I be able to sign the contract?

thanks

Your medical school may require passing Step 2 prior to graduation. If so, you need to make sure to retake it soon enough that it doesn't prevent you from graduating. I believe that posters on SDN have mentioned this being a problem in the past -- the limited number of Step 2 administrations delaying graduation.

Else, your contract will simply require that you have a license before starting working, and may require passing Step 2 if a license is not required.

Bottom line: you should plan to pass Step 2 ASAP. Sign up now, make sure you study.

The way it's most frequently done is that you have a contract that is conditioned on you passing the test by a certain date. Meaning you still sign the contract, but your residency has an out (and the contract is null and void) if you don't pass.

when is the contract typically signed? I know we learn of where we match on March 18th, and programs can send letters March 19th... do we typically get the contract in March, April, or is it done in the weeks right before you start? Thanks

This is a common question, and you can find multiple threads on it if you do a search.

But in general, most programs won't send a contract before a month or so after the match but the "typical" dates are highly variable. Program dependent.
