We had a surgery lecture today about surgical wounds and infections and what drugs to use? Our lecturer brought up the mnemonic "SPACE BUGS" which require double coverage to treat....any idea what the bugs are that make up the mnemonic

P can also represent Providencia. These bugs are all known to have inducible beta-lactamases and can develop beta-lactam resistance during treatment. This tends to happen less commonly if you use a higher generation cephalosporin.

There is a bug called Stephotronomonas (spelling?) - the old name was Pseudemonas multifilia. It's supposed to be double covered (always Bactrim and another drug).

It's not very common and prefers immunocompromised patients (tranplant pts, usually).

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is actually the fourth most common ventilator pathogen, which makes it a little bit more than rare. By no means common though. Does require double coverage.

That's how I remember it. The mnemonic MESSY SPECK can help you remember all the Enterobacteriaceae: Morganella, Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia, Serratia, Proteus, Enterobacter, Citrobacter, and Klebsiella. 🙂
