Question about Step 2 CK and ERAS

Hi all,

If I take Step 2CK in mid-to-late July, will it auto-report to ERAS and will all the program I applied to receive it? Or do I have a choice to not release it yet?

Additional factor to confuse things: NBME released a statement that if you take Step 2 CK after July 27, then you won't receive your score back until September 25 at the earliest. Does this mean that it would not be auto-reported if I submitted ERAS the day it opens up (September 15 or so)?

If you apply before your score is reported, you'll have the choice to auto-report your scores (and they will automatically be sent) or to manually update your scores. If you apply after your score is reported, then your full transcript at the time of application is sent.

So if I understand correctly, it depends when your score comes back not when your test date is?

With the score report delay I mentioned above, if I take my test Aug 1 for example, the score report comes back Sept 30 for example but I submitted my application Sept 15, then do I have the choice to manually update or is it auto-report? Thanks in advance.

It's when the score comes back. When you apply, your current score report is uploaded as part of your application. There might be a 1-3 day delay. But if you apply Sept 15 and then your score comes back Sept 30, and you chose manual release, then you have the option to release it or not.

Of course I also have the right to ask you, at your interview, when you're taking Step 2. And then when I find out that you already took it and are hiding the score from me, I can use that knowledge to determine your position on my rank list.

It won't show up unless it is released. However, an increasing number of programs are requiring step 2 scores before they place applicants on their rank lists.

In addition to what b-real said, if your Step 2 score comes back before you submit, you have to release it no matter what.

You should also assume that somebody at each interview will ask your plans for Step 2. If your answer is that you already took it, the follow up question will of course be, "so what was your score and when will you release it?".

Hiding a sub-par step 2 Score may help you get an interview, but it won't help you when it comes to the rank list, which is the most important part.

When are rank lists decided?

Regarding the importance of a good Step 2. Doesn't it really depend on the specialty? Some specialties don't value Step 2 where as some care a lot (ie. internal medicine). Also do most residency programs state whether or not they require Step 2 before placing you on the rank list?


I had a friend who matched in a tough specialty without taking Step 2 until very late in the interview process. He said he was never asked about it on his interviews.
