When I took ACLS during my EM rotation the written (multi-choice) exam at the end was open book. I have to re-certify during orientation, even though my ACLS certification is practically brand new. Is the residency ACLS going to be any different to the course I took as a student? Will the final exam be open book?

Also when do the new ACLS protocols come into effect? Are any centers using them already.

I think they started at the end of March. And I doubt your exam will be open book.

I just took ACLS last week. They are teaching the new protocols (although there is still a lot of confusion over the changes and some misinformation being given out). There is no new textbook that includes the changes, but there is a spiral-bound book that they give out which contains the algorithms and the updated recommendations. We were allowed to use that book while taking the test, but honestly, you really don't need it. I didn't look at it once. The test is fairly straightforward, and the questions that are "difficult" are on things that aren't covered in the course and wouldn't be in the book.
