I know it's probably a bit premature for this, but I have a question regarding the summer between first and second year. I would really like to do my residency at Boston Children's (I know, who doesn't - but I'm trying my best now) or another Boston hospital. Should I do basic research this summer? I have no experience with this at all. I would like to do a community service project dealing this childhood illiteracy instead, but if research is what these places want, I guess I'll have to suck it up.

Can you let me know if you have any info? Thanks!

I'm not sure how dead set Children's is on having basic science research over more clinical research or community evaluation, but try to get in touch with Perri Klass-she's an HMS grad (wrote a book called A Not Entirely Benign Procedure), and is really active in childhood literacy issues-she directs the special interest group at the pediatric research meetings each year.

My advice would be: if you can do basic science, enjoy it, and be able to discuss it with passion at the end-go for it. But if you'll have to rehearse a few lines so that it sounds like you have a clue-do something that helps kids that you are passionate about-it is more likely to get you noticed.
