question about topic of research

Hi, I am a second year medical student and I am hoping to eventually do a fellowship in IM. My question is, should I focus on one field right now or do research broadly , since I have no idea what I want to do? I am currently involved in projects in heme/onc, endo, and nephrology.

Those specialties are broad enough that you can apply them to multiple fields. If you narrow down what you want to do later, you can focus more on that specialty, but keep doing what you're doing for now 🙂

My med school research was in a field that was totally unrelated to what I'm doing now. It's still on my CV, and you'll still learn how to write and conduct research, which are skills that are worthwhile regardless of what you go into

I second what Spurs said. You don't need to have a perfectly planed, linear career path. Sure, if you're doing ortho research for all of med school and end up applying psych then you'll need to simply address that at some point in the residency application process but it's not really looked down on vs someone with similar specialty-relevant experience.
