Hello everyone,
I have a question about transferring, and would appreciate opinions on my situation. I am currently a first year med student at an allopathic school in VA. I would like to transfer to Georgetown after this year is over. I have discovered that they accept 1st-2nd year transfers and that in the past, they have had ~3-4 slots open. Georgetown does not know how many slots they will have until this spring, at which time the applications are open.

I want to transfer because:
-as a med master student at Georgetown last year, I found the curriculum and teachers at Georgetown to be far superior than what I have experienced the past 2 months at my current school. I honestly believe that I will become a better doctor with the knowledge I would gain at Georgetown compared to my current school.

-Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, my father's health has declined in the past year, and by being closer to home (Maryland is home), I would be able to assist my dad with anything he may need.

I understand that this is a difficult process. I know that I will need a letter from my dean showing that I am in good standing. Do you think this is something I should bring to his attention now? What else should I be doing? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion Dral, I think this might be the best course of action.

You have a good reason for transfer in that your father is ill. I would look into all of the DC schools that accept transfer students and not put your eggs into Georgetown alone no matter how much you love the place. GWU used to accept transfers into year 2 and you might look at UMD too. If you truly want to help with your father's illness, you won't be picky about which school takes you. UMD is an awesome school too and certainly far less expensive than GT or GW.
