Tucom gets about 4000 applicants, half of which will get secondaries. Dr. Haight personally reads all of the secondaries. He doesn't get vote in the selection process, but he does hand select every interviewee. If you get a secondary, it means that you meet their (relatively stringent) minimum requirements for admission. If you get an interview, it means that Dr. Haight saw something in your application that says you will be a fit at TUCOM. I don't know what happened to your friends. Maybe they were lacking a certain prerequisite.
