Hi Fellow Wolverines,

I'm starting medical school this coming August and was wondering what tips/advice you have for new, incoming students to make the transition to an M1 as smooth as possible. What pitfalls should new students watch out for? What kinds of activities do you absolutely recommend or simply feel are worth taking a look at? Im really excited to be studying at Michigan and can't wait til August. Thanks!

Hi Chouster,

Congratulations on your acceptance to Michigan. It's a wonderful place to study medicine--rigorous but exceptionally good. Outstanding teachers and role models who are truly dedicated to education, amazing research opportunities, excellent clinical facilities, very bright and highly motivated (but laidback) students...this place is awesome.

What should you be doing to ease the transition to 1st year? Nothing! Relax and do whatever you enjoy. The preclinical years of medical school are essentially a test of your endurance. The very last thing you should do is study or stress yourself out before you even begin med school. Students very rarely fail courses here (maybe 1 person per year fails a course). So don't study or buy any special books over the next few months. Have fun, relax, and pursue your passions in life.

Thanks! That sounds like a pretty easy plan to me 🙂 How about in regards to once I begin? I'm very interested in the MedBuddies and MedReach programs. These look like awesome opportunities for early-on clinical exposure and being able to inspire young high schoolers to pursue science-related careers (I'm also a science geek). To Surgeonizer, or anyone else, what extracurricular programs have you become involved in? What did you like? What didn't you like? Thanks!
