I was just wondering how much chem and ochem do you encounter in some of your pharmacy courses? Is a majority of these courses mostly memorization?

A good deal of both mem. and chem. and it's only my first sem. of my p1 year.

I'm just a P1 too. Definitely a good bit of memorization and chemistry. The only thing related to ochem I've used so far is functional groups and being able to draw a structure from the name. Biochem stuff comes up a lot. From looking at the classes we have to take and talking to other students, you really will be using a bit of everything at some point. There's a lot of memorization, but you also have to be able to apply it.

P1 here also. All I can say is I wish I had worked harder in General Chem 2! Kinetics...pka..ph.kb..ka..henderson-hasselbach...acids/bases!!!.......all coming back to haunt me!

Organic so far has been pretty much the basics, functional groups, hydrogen bonding, saturation/unsaturation. I don't even know if we're going to use ANYthing from organic II. Seems doubtful. Who knows though!

There are some things pulled from those courses, but it is definitely not an overwhelming majority. Just so you know, I did really poorly in organic chemistry and ended up excelling in pharmacy school and am now a pharmacist. Don't let chemistry scare you off if that's the concern here.

better living through chemistry...

you'll be fine. just remember basic stuff from chem1.

I took 2 years of organic and analytical chem and hated them. Now in medicinal chem we use some topics from those two, so it's nothing major. Know your IUPAC though, good when you need to draw structures and SAR's, etc.
