I am a "woman of color". I have some scares that are darker then my actual skin color. I have considered using fade cream in hopes that the scares will lighten or fade somewhat. However, I am hesitant because I don't want any areas aroud my scares to be lightened if it comes to contact with the cream. I don't want to lighten my overall skin-color, just the scars. I have used other types of over the counter scar reducers/"medications" but they do not work well.

I was wondering, when using fade creams do they only target the hyper-pigmented areas or can they actually effect the actual overall skin color that is not hyper-pigmented?

I am not asking for advice. I am aware that is prohibited. But, I just want to know the capabilties of fade cream before I use it. Moderators if you feel there is a more appropriate forum for my inqueries feel free to move it.

Thank You.

Toxicologist, not Dermatologist

Many fade creams are mercury based. There are several case reports of patients developing clinically significant mercury toxicity from them. Our group has found several that were illegally being sold in the US and were labelled mercury free.

Further issues should be directed to your doctor.
