Hi everyone,
I'm new to this board and had a few questions for the experts here.
First of all I'm a Locum tenens recruiter BUT.......... I'm not here to advertise or try to sell anything. My only reason for being here is to educate myself and hear opinions/concerns from a physician's perspective.
So here are my questions:

1- What is it about locums that you like/dislike?
2- If you could change anything about locums companies what would it be?
3- What could a recruiter do to make your search for a position easier?
4- What sites do you visit most frequently to find locums assignments?
5- Which locums companies do you think are the best? and why?

Thanks in advance for any answers you can provide.

This isn't so much a problem with locums, but recruiters in general. I absolutely hate getting unsolicited emails from recruiters, especially when I've notified every organization I'm a member of not to disclose my email address. It's gotten so bad lately that I've created an individual email address for each organization so I can track down which is selling my email address.

I hate the recruiter calls, despite the fact that I've told them over and over that I'm in a permanent position and not actively looking.

Also, what is the problem with Maine? Why are there so many jobs there?

Our unit coordinators screen a lot of the recruiter calls at work, but a couple of times a week a recruiter will identify themselves as a physician from an OSH. I dislike being bothered at work (whether it's drug reps or recruiters), I hate dropping what I'm doing to discuss a transfer that turns out to be a job offer for BFE Arkansas.

probably because...
Maine has no medical school.

http://www.downeast.com/node/10550

"One factor working against Maine's ability to attract new doctors over the years has been its lack of a traditional medical school (though the University of New England has operated its College of Osteopathic Medicine since 1978). Since building a bricks-and-mortar medical school would be exceptionally expensive, this fall the state will launch a new agreement with Tufts University and the University of Vermont to allow medical students to do some of their clinical rotations in Maine.

"We need to grow our own, to let kids see what it's like to work in Maine," Ham says. "The more we can expose people in training to physicians in Maine, and to the health-care system in Maine, the more likely they are to stay here." This period in a medical student's training is especially critical for states like Maine, Ham says, as this is when young doctors typically marry and choose where they'd like to raise a family." -downeaster mag

Oh. wait we do.
an excellent D.O. school with a very high retention rate for docs staying in the state and delivering primary care.

This kind of BS by recruiters is already making me sick. Particularly when I am studying for both the COMLEX and USMLE. I have been meaning to write downeaster and recruiter Jane Ham.

Maine is a great place to practice. I think it recruits b/c it is big and because we have the oldest population in the country (or very close to it).

You mean, with the exception of us here in Oklahoma, right? We got both kinds of music, y'know.

'cause it's F&$*IN'G COLD AS HELL up there!

At least, that's this Texan's opinion.

The past couple of days make me think about agreeing.

It's been around 103 for the past couple of days. It hit 107 in Central Texas where I live. Yuck.

The real joy comes when you realize it's that hot outside and your AC broke. Joy, as in, the AC guy says the part won't be in for another couple of days.

Take care,
Jeff

Yep, 108 degrees at 4:30 pm today in West Austin... not even July. Taking a toll on a lot of people; the EM was so full today we put people in the front lobby, gave them water, salts and ice packs...

now now. there are some nice locations in western arkansas. i like it here. the other side we should just donate to mississippi.

That's one thing I became accustomed to in Texas. I have some in my fridge right now.

how can you be sure it is safe in the fridge? Don't you think you oughta keep it closer by, like in your belly?

You've seen my posts over time. Do you think I EVER feel guilty about posting anything on here?

Fair enough. I'm guessing you probably don't think about cutting down on posts about Shiner Bock, either?

Ever feel the need to write about it's gold, full-bodied flavor on SDN in the wee hours of the morning, just to get those sleepy eyes open?

Take care,
Jeff

Damn you, now my fridge has one less Shiner. :sendoff:

now THIS is an EM forum thread. All we need is a FMF thrown in after someone tries to get back on topic.

Which, I think, had to do with how cold Maine is, and why none of us Southern docs would go there. And then beer sort of took over.

Carry on. (But can I have a Shiraz instead? I'm not much of a beer drinker.)+pad+

Shiraz. Nice try. Let me get this thread back on topic:

Ah, much better! 😀

Hey Veers I know you aren't an alcoholic. Don't listen to those people, they just don't like us. It's ok if you have another one. I'll go buy you some at the store, get you to feeling better.

wow. that picture came out big. I like it.

I hope I am not going to induce some SDNer's relapse with that picture.

One has to actually quit before one can relapse. Doesn't seem to be a problem around here.

Dchristmi,

Just for you I had to break out a bottle of Cab tonight after work.

For those of you who listen to Risk Management Monthly, you'll know that Greg Henry closes each month with a wine recommendation. Here's mine (from my beloved sister-in-law who owns a wine store in San Antonio): Terra Valentine Cab, 2005.

Now, lest anyone think I've abandoned the true 'gist' of this thread, I offer my local, former hometown "Manna from Heaven":

Thanks for the nod, there.

I am working through a blend at the moment - I'm rather surprised, the Menage a Trois 07, excellent blend of cab, merlot and zin.

And I deserve it after the sphincter-tightening 5 day old taching at 270 this afternoon.

Or perhaps, for a summery day, one of husband's favorites.

I hate to disagree (and being a Texan, Shiner is my staple...) but the best beer I've ever had is...

The Ayinger Celebrator...

Isn't it fascinating how a thread about alcohol will produce so much more enthusiasm and participation among an EM crowd?

Yes, fascinating indeed. We clearly could be discussing the value of d-dimer in patients at low-risk for PE.

Or...

My top 5 favorite beers:

Oh crap. I forgot Shiner and Celis.

I feel like John Cussack in High Fidelity.

Take care,
Jeff

Hmmm.

I have never tried chimay. In fact, I can't say that without hearing "Timmay!"...I'd probably like it

1. shiner bock
2. Leinenkugel
3. Caffrey's irish ale
4. murphy's
5. regular old budweiser

My preferred bottle of rotgut beer is Rolling Rock. But, just recently, New Belgium became available in South Carolina! Fat Tire is definitely at the top of the list; here, they also released 1554 (black ale) and Mothership Wit (white ale). Interestingly, even though only in 23 states, New Belgium Brewery is still the 3rd largest "microbrewery" in the US, after Boston Beer (Sam Adams) and Sierra Nevada.

Kona beers have become a new favorite, though. One thing I noticed, though, over the last 2 years, brewing in bottles moved from the big island to Manchester, New Hampshire! It became more "cost effective" to brew it on the mainland, instead of flying/shipping bottles to Hawai'i. However, if it's on tap, it's brewed in Kona. I was told that they "condition" the water in NH so that it is like Kona water. What other brewery is there is Magic Hat, so I wonder if they're making it under contract for Kona.
