I have my interview on 10/12/07 and I am really excited. I just have a few questions though for some students.

1) My wife is a physician assistant with 7 years experience in rural health. is there a good number of clinics around where she might get a job? Are there many PA's employed/practicing in the area?

2) Where do most students live? Middleboro? Knowxville? We were hoping to drive around on Saturday and look at the different towns, and see where might be a nice place to live if I get accepted?

thanks for all help. I am really looking forward to making it out there for my interview. I have heard so many great things about LMU-DCOM

I am not a student there but I have grown up in the area. The closest area that she would be able to find a good paying job would probably be Middlesboro or Knoxville. I would suggest taking a drive down into LaFollete and having a look around. There really isn't much at all around. You are going to be in a shock when you see how surrounded you are with mountains and farm land.

First off, congrats on the intervew!!!

Regarding your wife, I doubt she would have much of a problem. The area can always use more medical staff. I don't know how many clinics there are around, but that would be an ideal question to ask during your interview. Also, LMU will be starting a PA program here in 2009, so there may be an opportunity there, but I don't know. I would recommend asking one of the clinicians and see what they say in terms of area clinics, etc. But I imagine she would be snagged up fairly quickly. Besides, she could always open her own clinic as well.

As for places to live, the main towns would be Harrogate, Tazewell, New Tazewell (all in TN) and Middlesboro, KY. I would not live in Knoxville b/c that is a really long drive. There are a couple of students who do that drive, but I would advice against it, if at all possible (the biggest reason students stay in Knoxville is b/c of family - kids in school, spouse job, etc., but your wife should be able to find something close to school). Try to stay as close to school as possible b/c you will have many long nights studying, trust me. Whether you want to rent or not is your option. I would plan on moving closer to your core hospital for 3rd and 4th year roatations b/c you don't want to be driving long distances then either. I, for example, am planning on moving after 2nd year to be closer to the hospital. Most of the hospitals will be in Knoxville, but some are farther away, like Chatanooga (sp?). I will be renting for all 4 years so I don't have to try to sell a place (I am going thru not now - my wife and I are trying to sell our condo back in Chicago, so we are paying both rent and a mortgage - not fun). But you will be learning all about the rotations during the interview, so you will be able to think about it better then. But I highly recommend staying as close to school as possible.

Good luck on the interview and I will see you then!!!

is DCOM going to have an open house this fall? does anyone know? It doesnt have one listed on the open house thread. Just figuring someone knew something

Besides, from Knoxville which is the biggest town population wise? Rural location does not bother my wife and I, just thinking we might like to do something on the rare occassion I get a chance to come up for air from studying. Thaks for all the info, I expect to meet some of you guys and gals at my interview.

I think this was answered earlier, so i'll keep it simple. 1. there are a few hospitals in the area, and I bet they are hurting for any kind of trained help they can get. The COM has a PA program opening in a few years and so I bet the market is a bit dry right now, might be possible to get a pretty decent job. Most students live in the LMU apartments, harrogate, or middlesboro. a few live in tazewell or halls, and its not a terrible drive to and from. good luck on your interview, its low stress and the place is fantastic.

Population wise, probably Middlesboro. Tazewell and New Tazewell are a good size, along with LaFollette and Jacksboro (down on TN-63). Although these are bigger towns, there isn't a ton to do. The nearest Chili's, Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, and every other chain restaurant, large mall, etc. is in Knoxville. So most likely, when you and your wife want to do something, it will be in Knoxville, which you can get to in an hour or so from school. Many of the married people try to take one day during the weekend to spend with their families. It is a really good idea and school encourages it very much.

As far as town size goes, Middlesboro is the largest town near the school and where I live. It's got over 12000 people, the rest of the towns like Harrogate and New Tazewell are about 2800. There is a movie theater in Middlesboro ($1.50 per person for first run movies) there is a small mall and places to eat out. There is no Applebee's or Chilli's though you have to go to Knoxville for that. There is a national park between Middlesboro and Harrogate with plenty of hiking/biking trails if you like that.

If you end up attending DCOM you really should visit Gatlinburg, if you haven't already. I love Ripley's Aquarium and there's just a lot of really cool, fun stuff to do there. I believe it took me about 45 minutes to get there from my school in Knoxville but that was over six years ago so I could be wrong.

Congrats on the interview. It sounds like you are equally excited as I am about interviewing at DCOM. I'm interviewing on 12th as well. See you there.

How are the roads out there for cycling? Wide shoulders?

I assume good hills.

The main roads are good, but there are TONS of trails around, so those would be your best bet. And yes, there are hills.....lots of hills. Just wait until you see the hill DCOM is on.

If you are looking for road cycling you might have to look around, if you are used to bike lanes and wide shoulders (like I am) you are going to have to stick to the highways. There are a lot of back country roads here with great hills but I'm not brave enough to ride them on my bike. They are too narrow for me. If you have a mountain bike you can use for training rides there are lots of trails with hills to ride. For any distance rides you are looking at highway.

I've never been on a ride out there, but that area has some of the best places to run around, some of the best trails I've ever done

The Aquarium is AWESOME. I'm looking forward to next summer to have more time to explore.

As for running trails, there are some great ones up by school...I hope to start taking clothes along with me just to run up there.

Trail riding with a MTB is fun, but it can be hard to keep your HR steady. It is more technical than it is challenging on endurance.

Again, congrats on the interview! I'm one of the students that attempted to attend DCOM and live in knoxville due to family reason. I would really really urge against it! I couldn't make it work. I ended up getting an apartment in Harrogate, and just going back to Knoxville on the weekends. I couldn't afford the loss of three hours of study time everyday! Knoxville is a great place to visit on the weekends for some R&R, but I would recommend living as close as possible!

See you soon! 🙂
